2 Analysing & Discussing Poetry What are the most important parts of a poem’s form and structure?

3 AO2: Explain how language, structure and form contribute to writers’ presentation of ideas, themes and settings. This means you have to look in real detail at the words and techniques the poet uses to create the themes, the rhythm, the subject matter, the voice and the tone of the poem form. In addition, if you know what specific form of poem you are reading, you should make a point about how the poet uses that form – maybe it’s a sonnet, a villanelle, a dramatic monologue etc… The Yellow Palm Robert Minhinnick

6 GRADES For a C grade: Explain that the first line of each stanza is repeated (to draw attention to incidents, or stress the poet’s repeated sightings of violence) Explain that ordinary scenes are followed by images of conflict Mention the last stanza Explain the rhyme scheme Use short quotations to show this For an A grade: Discuss the contrast between ordinary life and conflict, commenting on language choices. Refer to the theme change in stanza five Explain the significance of the rhyme scheme to the poem’s effect Discuss the significance of the last stanza and its message
