3 ALLIES France After Battle of Saratoga- France openly declared war against Britain and formed an alliance with Americans (1778) France sent money, troops, and military supplies Spain Did not recognize Americans as independent but hated Britain so joined war anyway (1779)

5 WINTER AT VALLEY FORGE Turn Around Point -Winter ended -Soldiers joined ranks -Washington announced French alliance which boosted morale.

6 EUROPEAN FRIENDS Marquis de Lafayette -French nobleman -George Washington’s trusted aide. Friederich von Steuben -Former German army officer -Drilled Continental Army with Discipline in Valley Forge Juan de Miralles -Representative of Spain -De Miralles convinced Mexico, Spain, and Cuba to send financial supplies to Patriotic Cause.

7 MONEY PROBLEMS Continental Congress had no money to raise through taxes. -Printed millions of dollars Problem 1.Inflation- Takes more money to buy the same amount of goods. (In other words the value of money is decreased). Continental Congress stopped issuing money

8 LIFE AT THE HOME FRONT Women Idea of liberty and freedom questioned women’s societal position 1.Judith Sargeant Murray -Women should have the same educational quality as men. 2. Abigail Adams (John Adams’s wife)

9 LIFE AT THE HOME FRONT Treatment of Loyalists 1.Fought on the British side & spied on Patriots to prove their loyalty 2. Left to England, Florida, and the frontier past Appalachian Mountains and Canada. 3. Shunned and mocked by Patriots. Became victims to mob violence. Some were arrested for helping Britain. In rare occasions few Loyalists were executed for their crimes.

10 LIFE AT THE HOME FRONT Hopes for Equality 1.Christian and other groups condemned slavery -New Jersey Governor William Livingston asked legislature to end slavery in New Jersey. Livingston said “Slavery is utterly inconsistent with principles of Christianity and humanity.” 2. Many fought for the American cause in the hope of abolishment of slavery.
