2  Colonies declared independence from England in July 1776  Advantages and Disadvantages for each side? Neutral-

3 Loyalist  Tories  At least one out of five was a loyalist  Maybe as much as one out of three  Loyalist support was strongest?

4 Mercenaries  Hessians-

5 Continental Army  Patriot forces  At first soldiers only signed up for a year  Women also fought  Margaret Corbin-took her husbands place in battle after he died  Molly Pitcher-  Deborah Sampson-disguised herself as a boy and fought

6 Nathan Hale  “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”  Patrick Henry said, “..give me liberty or give me death.”

7 African Americans join the fight  Rhode Island first state to enlist African American soldiers  Two important fighters-Lemuel Hayes and Peter Salem

8  Continental Congress designed the first stars and stripes (flag)

9 Patriots slow the British Green Mountain Boys-Local militia group

10 Battle of Saratoga  Horatio Gates blocked General Burgoyne (Redcoats) from going south

11 Section 2  The War Continues  The victory at Saratoga boosted American spirits and brought Spain and France into the war as allies

12 Valley Forge  Washington and his troops spent the winter of 1777-1778 in Valley Forge  Endured terrible suffering  Many men deserted

13 Help from oversees  French nobleman Marquis de Lafayette offered his help. He became a trusted aide  Friedrich von Steuben drilled the Patriot troops at Valley Forge. Taught them military discipline.

14 Treatment of Loyalist during war  Many where shunned. Some became victims of mob violence. Some arrested and tried as traitors.  Many fled the American colonies. Some went to Florida. Others went west.

15 Section 3  War moves West and South  Many Native Americans helped the British  Why?  Privateers-

16 John Paul Jones  American naval officer  Raided British ports  His ship was called Bonhomme Richard  Attacked the ship Serapis  “I have not yet begun to fight.”

17 Guerrilla warfare  One leader was Francis Marion

18 Section 4  The last major battle of Revolutionary War was at Yorktown, Virginia.  The final treaty that officially ended the war was called the Treaty of Ghent. The treaty was signed on September 3, 1783.

19 Section 4  Siege at Yorktown, Virginia  Last battle
