2. Gaining Allies
Ben Franklin was in France trying to get France to help the Colonist
The victory at Saratoga lifted the Patriots’ spirits and encouraged France to form an Alliance with America in 1778

3. France declared war on Great Britain in 1778 and sent money, troops and equipment.
Spain soon declares war on Britain. Bernardo de Galvez, the Spanish governor of Louisiana, raised an army that forced British soldiers from Baton Rouge and Natchez.

4. George Washington (a) and his troops set up camp at Valley Forge, where they suffered a cold winter with little clothing, shelter, or decent food.
Volunteers, including Washington’s wife Martha, helped making clothes and cared for the sick

5. British General Howe and his forces spent the winter in Philadelphia
Much easier winter then Washington’s troops in Valley Forge.
Washington’s greatest task was keeping his army together at Valley Forge

6. Several Europeans, such as Polish cavalry officer Casimir Pulaski, worked for the Patriot cause.

German officer Friedrich von Steuben helped turn the Continental Army into a more efficient fighting force

7. The Continental Congress had no power to levy taxes
The Continental Congress had no power to levy taxes. Therefore, Congress printed hundreds of millions of dollars worth of paper money that soon lost its value because there was not enough gold and silver to back it. This caused INFLATION.

8. Life on the Home Front
The war caused many Loyalist to flee their homes in America
The ideals of liberty and freedom caused some Women to question their place in society and some Americans to question Slavery

9. Women ran the households’ or their own businesses.
Judith Sargeant Murry of Mass. Argued that girls deserved as good an education as boys.
