SUB GENRES IN HORROR By Carolyn Marshall

Psychological Paranormal Comedy horror Sci-fi horror Horror romance A few different sub-genres

1.Tends to distort familiar realities 2.Generally have disturbing themes 3.You almost always have a villain which denotes evil and a victim which denotes innocence 4.Generally uses Todorovs’ structure for example: In Texas chainsaw massacre, the 2009 adaptation. My point is that usually horror movies do, sometimes, follow rules and conventions of other genres. The film opens with a group of what seems to be, happy teenagers going on a road trip in a rural town. Equilibrium/ normality Disruption of equilibrium They get a flat tired and has to stop. Recognition of disruption Two members of the group try to find help and stubble across a house where they find the masked serial killer. Horror movies… Attempts to repair the disruption Finds the sheriff, although he is in on it but runs away from him and finds refuge in an abandoned meat factory Return to equilibrium/normality The only survivor manages to find a truck and drives away into safety

Through Mise-en-scene and editing you can see deliberate changes to a prop or character which contributes to the overall presumptions of horror. Also, continuity has been applied and considered as the directors most always wants the film to be realistic which adds to the excitement and anticipation. For instance: A knife (type of camera shot: close up) – usually has a white light shone on to it to emphasise the danger and sharpness of it, close up to indicate its going to be used. The killers face - usually a very dim light/no light is shone onto it to keep it unknown which adds the suspense and excitement of a horror. (adds to the realism of murders always striking at night and/or wearing a mask.) Audio- the sound effects are essential in horror movies. Loud bangs, high pitched screeches and abrupt noise are usually connected to horror.

Elements in a horror movie: Rural/isolated environment Loud/abrupt sound effects Weapon of some sort- knife, gun, hammer. Dark/dim lightning Little dysgenics when problem/disruption arises (silence) Blood/gore Types of camera shots: Extreme/ close ups- victims face Extreme/ Long shot- the house (shows location) Worms eye view- hiding information such as identity High angled shot- of victim shows weakness, vulnerability and powerless. Parallel shots- increase tension, suspense and excitement
