Armstrong

Childhood Born August 4, 1901 in New Orleans in a ghetto known as the “Back of Town” Armstrong was many times in the Home for Colored Waifs. It was here that he developed a serious passion for playing cornet. (which is a variation of a trumpet) He wrote a memoir about being raised by a white Jewish family and how astonished he was to see the discrimination that was meted out to Karnofskys by the white people, who viewed that they were better than the Jewish race.

Beginning of a Music Career Influenced by the leading jazz artists like Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, and Kid Ory including the leading cornet player of New Orleans, Joe “King” Oliver “King” was like a father figure to him In 1919, when Joe Oliver resigned from his position in Kid Ory’s band, Armstrong replaced him. He also became the second trumpet for the Tuxedo Brass Band, which was a society band.

Career By the time he reached his twenties, he could read music and started featuring in extended trumpet solos. He was the first jazz man to do this, implementing his own personality and style into the solo turns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRjT4h7F _jw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRjT4h7F _jw

View Points on Jazz Davis thought Armstrong pandered to a white audience. Davis called it "grinning," and believed it was a throwback to the days when white musicians would wear blackface makeup to perform for white audiences. In other terms what Armstrong did best was being an entertainer and Miles was best at being laid back and cool. “I ain’t no entertainer, and ain’t trying to be one…My troubles started when I learned to play the trumpet and hadn't learned to dance…they want you to not only play your instrument, but to entertain them too, with grinning and dancing.” (Miles, 19) Armstrong was a proven older jazz musician and rejected Bepop, he said it sounded too exotic and Chinese.

Legacy Ironically Armstrong’s style of scat singing leads to the creation of Bebop, a style of jazz which he didn’t particularly like – “this modern malice” – Louis Armstrong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6KAbz Bs8nU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6KAbz Bs8nU
