4 Inspiration… Low socio-economic background Single parent home Lacking community involvement Lacking of inspirational leaders High gang rates Drug fluency in the neighborhood Making a safer Pilgrim Creating a positive learning environment Promoting self esteem Creating a safer community Helping our students to succeed and to be safe

5 Research Synthesize Do to the lack of positive gender role models for the students in our school, we propose the program called CATCH. The Bellaire Fire Station, and the Bellaire Police Department will adopt Pilgrim. Documented http://dept.houstonisd. org/profiles/Pilgrim_ES. pdf http://dept.houstonisd. org/profiles/Pilgrim_ES. pdf

6 Educational Value/ Connection to the standards. The main value of the CATCH program lies within the support that the students shall receive from within their community. Citizenship. The student understands the importance of voluntary individual participation in the democratic process. The student is expected to: 18. (A) explain how individuals can participate voluntarily in civic affairs at state and local levels; (19) Citizenship. The student understands the importance of effective leadership in a democratic society. The student is expected to:(B) identify leadership qualities of state and local leaders, past and present. TEK 4 th Grade SS NCSS Theme: Civic Ideals, and Practices

7 The Project… Do to the fact that many of our students come from a single parent household, they are often in times lacking a positive role model within the opposite gender. The community’s Emergency Respond Team ( police/firefighters), will be able to add the lacking positive reinforcement that they student’s are seeking. This program will continue throughout the academic year. The volunteers will be assigned to different classrooms within the 4 th grade level. The fourth grade was chosen due to the recent statistics that show, this is the age group that is most vulnerable to negative outside influences ( drugs, gangs, peer pressure). They will come into the classroom twice a week, during the last twenty minutes and build a relationship with the students. This will allow the students to see them as positive influences, and not someone to be afraid of. By establishing a positive community support system, the students will have someone of moral standing to CATCH them if they should start to fail!
