1 GRAPH Definition: A PICTORIAL REPRESENTATION OF INFORMATION RECORDED IN A DATA TABLE. USED TO SHOW A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO OR MORE FACTORS.

2 DATA TABLE Definiton: AN ORGANIZED WAY OF PRESENTING INFORMATION.
Example: POPULATION OF Heddenville YEAR X # OF PEOPLE Y 2009 250 2010 375 2011 432 2012 628 2013 890 2014 1100 ORDERED PAIR ( X,Y ) EX.( 2009, 250 )

3 INFORMATION IN A DATA TABLE
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (YEAR) THE FACTOR THAT THE SCIENTIST PURPOSELY CHANGES X-AXIS DEPENDENT VARIABLE (# OF PEOPLE) THE FACTOR IN AN EXPERIMENT A SCIENTIST WANTS TO OBSERVE OR MEASURE Y-AXIS Y-AXIS X-AXIS

4 TYPES OF GRAPHS 1. LINE GRAPH DEMONSTRATES CONTINUOUS
CHANGE USING ONE OR MORE LINES TO CONNECT A SERIES OF POINTS.

5 STEPS FOR MAKING A LINE GRAPH
1. PLACE THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE ON THE X-AXIS (horizontal) AND PLACE THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE ON THE Y-AXIS (vertical). 2. USING YOUR DATA TABLE, LABEL THE X & Y AXIS WITH A TITLE. 3. CREATE A SCALE WITH EVEN INTERVALS THAT WILL ACCOMMODATE THE DATA. DO NOT PUT YOUR DATA VALUES AS YOUR SCALE.

6 STEPS FOR MAKING A LINE GRAPH CONT.
4. PLOT YOUR ORDERED PAIRS USING A PENCIL. GO “OVER” ON THE X-AXIS AND “UP” ON THE Y-AXIS. 5. CONNECT YOUR POINTS WITH A RULER FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. 6. TITLE AT THE TOP OF THE GRAPH THAT REPRESENTS THE X & Y AXIS COMBINED.

7 SAMPLE LINE GRAPH

8 NOW IT’S YOUR TURN…CREATE A LINE GRAPH ON YOUR GRAPH PAPER USING A RULER FOR: POPULATION OF HEDDENVILLE YEAR X # OF PEOPLE Y 2006 250 2007 375 2008 432 2009 628 2010 890 2011 1100

9 BAR GRAPH 2. USED TO SHOW CHANGE OR FOR MAKING A COMPARISON.

10 HOW TO MAKE A BAR GRAPH 1. USE AN APPROPRIATE SCALE FOR THE Y-AXIS.
2. LABEL THE X-AXIS WITH APPROPRIATE DESCRIPTORS Ex. Months of Year, Names, Days of Week 3. PLOT DATA USING A RULER TO DRAW BARS 4. SHADE IN BARS AND MAKE A KEY FOR MULTIPLE BAR GRAPHS. 5. LABEL EACH AXIS AND TITLE GRAPH.

11 SAMPLE BAR GRAPH

12 NOW IT’S YOUR TURN…CREATE A BAR GRAPH ON YOUR GRAPH PAPER USING A RULER FOR: POPULATION OF HEDDENVILLE YEAR X # OF PEOPLE Y 2006 250 2007 375 2008 432 2009 628 2010 890 2011 1100
