3 Mr. A. M. Naik is a small town boy i.e. from Andhel in South Gujarat where he studied engineering. He joined L&T as a junior engineer in 1965. He has a punishing schedule and puts in 16 to 18 hours a day. “He actually took his first holiday 22 years after joining the company.

4 He became General Manager in 1985, and Vice President (Operations). Member of the Board in 1989 (in charge of the erstwhile Group II, now bifurcated into E&C and Heavy Engineering). In 1995, he was appointed President (Operations). In April 1999, he took over as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. On December 30,2003 he was appointed as the Chairman & Managing Director( CMD).

5 Under Naik’s stewardship, L&T has emerged as an engineering and construction behemoth with a presence across key sectors like power and capital goods, even as it exited unrelated businesses like cement, tractors and glass containers along the way. The operations division contributes a hefty65 per cent to the total turnover of the company.He thus brings to his new job, considerable experience and indepth knowledge of various operations of the company.

6 He is responsible for a series of initiatives within the organisation that have contributed significantly to its growth during the few years. In 1990, Group 2 was restructured into the unit equipment and projects group. The idea behind this move was to ensure that each slot would meet the needs of vital industries like fertiliser, power, cement and process industries like heavy chemicals, aromatics,downstream petrochemicals, oil and gas etc.

7 . Between late 1994 and 1995, he decided to divide the unit equipment group into four strategic business units which focused individually on each product line. Within industry circles, Naik is considered a pioneer in ushering in the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) concept to project execution in the country. He took over the reins of the group less than a decade ago and is credited in setting up a grassroots world-class heavy engineering works at Hazira and a technology and engineering complex at Mumbai and Baroda.

8 Naik is also extensively involved in social work and is currently developing the educational institution set up by his father in a region called Kharel, Gujarat

9 Mr. Naik was also the recipient of the prestigious 'Economic Times -Business Leader of the Year' award, for the year 2008. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's 3rd highest civilian award,on January 26,2009.

10 It targets projects to be executed on principles of Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT), Build-Operate- Transfer (BOT), Build-Own-Lease-and-Transfer (BOLT) ECC promotes construction vocational training in India in a professional manner through Construction Skills Training Institute (CSTI) and turns out significant numbers of trained workers. CSTI has been set up in an area of 5 acres land in Chennai and Panvel near Mumbai with permanent infrastructure and training facilities.
