4 WP4: Research Workshop 1 When/where: proposed middle/end of May (2013) in Klaipeda Who: researchers, decision making authorities, planners Keynote Speaker (accepted): dr. R de Groot (Ecosystem Services, Wageningen University, IUCN, Westbank Symposium on MSP) Objective(s) (1) What is the current state of research on these issues and how it is being used by Planners, (2) what are tools available so far, and what is the contribution of those methods/concepts/models to MSP, (3) what are requirements for their implementation into decision making process and (4) to which extent can the addressed research foster synergies or support conflict mitigation among different actors. (5) rule of scientists, spatial dimension etc... Bullets * increasing interests in sea space and its usage require new forms of management and governance capable to support the long term sustainable use of the sea space. * Marine Spatial Planning has recently emerged as cross-sectoral governance tool for a more balanced management of marine ecosystems and socio-economic assets in the sea space. * Sustainability policies, such as the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive enforce the need of research and knowledge based solutions to achieve sustainability objectives and good environmental status of the Baltic Sea. * Although the MSFD asks for an ecosystem approach to achieve integrated marine management, current MSP approaches and frameworks insufficiently consider ecosystem services and their values in the planning process.

6 WP4: Cross-Sectorial workshops IDEA: to provide research agenda for MSP, based on LT Model case experience and sectorial Workshops in Environment and Data. What can research offer to... – SEA/EIA: e.g. human – ecosystem interaction; human – human interaction – Socio – economic modeling of conflict in MSP (tradeoff analysis) – Marine Ecosystem services assessment – combined use solutions for MSP: e.g. wind + wave energy (e.g. SUBMARINER) – Data gaps & data fusion in MSP prior analysis for the Cross-sectorial workshops identified 3 potential triggers: – Ongoing SEA in the LT Model case (till Nov. 2013) – Output from WP4 sectorial workshops on Environment and Data (Spring & Autumn) – BONUS Call: HELCOM – VASAB science - policy conference: Research needs in the Baltic Sea (March 2013)
