2 THE ANNEXATION OF TEXAS In the 1820s there were too few Mexican ppl living in Texas, so they allowed Americans to settle the territory: But they must follow Mexican laws! Mexico allows US citizens to settle as long as they:Learn Spanish, No Slavery, follow Mexican Laws… When Mexico tried to stop further American Immigration due to foreigners breaking laws, Texas declared Independence (1836) The Texas President (Antonio Lopez) overwhelmed the rebellion by at the Alamo; however, soon after the rebel capture Santa Anna and force recognition of their independence.

3 THE MEXICAN- AMERICAN WAR President Polk admits Texas into the Union in 1845 James K. Polk was an expansionist (‘Manifest Destiny’) Following the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Mexico lost much of its land and natural resources to the US Mexico lost: California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico (and Texas) = Southwest Territory Thousands of Mexicans became US citizens due to the boarder changing. The new culture was not welcomed into the US very easily, lots of prejudice and discrimination

4 KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT (1854) Summarize Missouri Compromise: Slavery in the West From our textbook work, what was the Compromise of 1850: Slavery in Southwest Territory Kansas and Nebraska wanted entrance as a state, but both were north of the 36° 30’. This worried southerners Senator Stephen Douglas (IL) suggested that Congress pass a law allowing the states to vote for themselves whether to have slavery or not. Violent Outcome: After the bill passed people from either side of the debate moved to Kansas or Nebraska to attempt to sway the vote. Armed clashes broke out: “Bleeding Kansas”

5 THE FOUNDING OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY In 1854 the Republican Party was founded as the Whig party waned in popularity. Founded by Whigs, Northern Democrats and Abolitionists, the party’s platform was: Keep slavery out of Western Territories Enact a high protective tariff to encourage Northern business Build a transcontinental railroad from Atlantic to Pacific
