12 SPSS on MAC  SPSS (Windows) may be installed on a MAC  A program called Parallels Desktop is needed to install SPSS (Windows) on a MAC and costs about $80.00, please visit: http://www.parallels.com/  VMware Fusion is also a program that lets users run Windows on a MAC and costs about $40.00, please visit: http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/resources/  SPSS does not support running SPSS17 on a Parallels Desktop or VMware  Please email assist for more information: assist@mcsr.olemiss.edu

13 Starting SPSS  Download freq.sps  To start SPSS go to: Start>All Programs>SPSS Inc>SPSS17.0>SPSS Statistics 17.0  Click “SPSS Statistics 17.0” to start SPSS17.0  Click “cancel” to close the Window “What would you like to do?”  On “Untitled1 Window” Choose File>Open>Syntax  Under Desktop, click freq.sps  Choose run>all, to run freq.sps

15 A Few Programming Notes About freq.sps  Comments are placed between “ /* ” and “ */ ” Example: /* This is a comment */  Example: freq.sps DATA LIST /male 1-2 female 4-6 DATA LIST signals the start of a program This program has only 2 variables, male and female Variable male is on columns 1-2 Variable female is on columns 4-6

20 Practicing “Point” and “Click”  Go to Untitled2  Choose Analyze>Descriptive Statistics>Frequencies  Choose variable DEP and perform the analysis  Choose another statistics, e.g. Correlate and find the correlation between the two variables

21 Creating and Running a Short SPSS Program  Close all SPSS’ Windows  Open SPSS and enter the following data in Untitled1  2 3  3 3  4 5  Obtain the Frequencies for the above data by  Analyze> Descriptive Statistics>Frequencies

22 Exercise: Creating Crosstab  Close all the SPSS Windows  Open SPSS and create a 3 by 6 matrix (3 rows and 6 columns)  Find Crosstabs under analyze and obtain the Crosstab
