1 3-D’ville Unit Portfolio Presentation Catherine Nosky Kiva Elementary - Sixth Grade Math

2 Unit Summary  Students will create a model scale town made of three-dimensional shapes (polyhedra, cylinders, and cones.)  Students will determine which buildings are necessary in their town, the shape of each building, and construct each building using paper templates.  Students will need to adhere to a budget.  Costs will be determined by one rate for all visible surface area and a different rate for all bases.  Students will use estimation skills for initial planning purposes.  Students will assign roles within their groups, such as city manager, mayor, CFO, etc.  Each group will need to present their model to the class; including a cost-analysis.

3 Arizona State Standards Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement Geometry is a natural place for the development of students' reasoning, higher thinking, and justification skills culminating in work with proofs. Geometric modeling and spatial reasoning offer ways to interpret and describe physical environments and can be important tools in problem solving. A major emphasis in this strand is becoming familiar with the units and processes that are used in measuring attributes. Concept 1: Geometric Properties: Analyze the attributes and properties of 2- and 3- dimensional figures and develop mathematical arguments about their relationships. PO 1. Define(pi) as the ratio between the circumference and diameter of a circle and explain the relationship among the diameter, radius, and circumference. Concept 4: Measurement: Understand and apply appropriate units of measure, measurement techniques, and formulas to determine measurements. PO 3. Estimate the measure of objects using a scale drawing or map. PO 4. Solve problems involving the area of simple polygons using formulas for rectangles and triangles. Strand 1: Number and Operations Number sense is the understanding of numbers and how they relate to each other and how they are used in specific context or real-world application. Students develop a sense of what numbers are, i.e., to use numbers and number relationships to acquire basic facts, to solve a wide variety of real-world problems, and to estimate to determine the reasonableness of results. Concept 2: Numerical Operations: Understand and apply numerical operations and their relationship to one another. PO 2. Multiply multi-digit decimals through thousandths.

6 21 st Century Skills Creativity and Innovation – students will have the opportunity to determine public needs and design a future city. Critical thinking and Problem Solving – students will need to make choices based on design to meet budgetary guidelines. Communication and Collaboration – students will need to demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work collaboratively. Productivity and Accountability – students will need to be responsible for their individual contributions to the team project. Leadership and Responsibility – students will need to acknowledge individual strengths and think and act as a team.

7 Gauging Student Needs Purpose of the Assessment: To gather information about what students already know about 3-demensional shapes, area, multiplying with decimals, and scale. How I will promote higher-order thinking: I will challenge students to find relationships and draw conclusions about design and cost. How the assessment information helps me and my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit? If students have a lack of knowledge in any of the content areas I can provide additional reinforcement through small group or individual instruction as well as additional practice.

8 Goals for My Students  Connect real-world applications to the study of mathematics.  Work collaboratively and improve their communication skills.  Provide an outlet for creativity.  Create enthusiasm for project based learning.

9 My Personal Goals  Develop a better understanding of how project based learning can be implemented in my classroom.  Involve students more in the decision process of the project and assessments.  Create more interest in the study of mathematics for my students.

10 Request for Feedback  Create more options for differentiation.  Develop better methods for ongoing assessment.  Systems to ensure individual accountability for a group project.
