2 4.2 Encourage tutees to express their own ideas -patience is required of the tutor -wait is required while tutee explains his/her self -use positive reinforcement

3 4.3 Active Listening Responses -are necessary to clarify tutee’s ideas and to improve communication between tutee and tutor

4 4.4 Redirection- turn question back to student in a simplified form - help tutee realize she possesses all knowledge that she needs to answer her question

5 4.5 Yield to the student’s ideas - because tutee must work with his own conceptions -priority goes to tutee’s thoughts and words -always show respect to the tutee

6 4.6 Build on tutee’s ideas - Don’t just jump in and tell tutee he’s wrong; work through idea/concept together

7 4.7 DelayedPositiveReinforcement -tutor reminds tutee of correct ideas tutee stated earlier so tutee can build on those ideas -this lets tutee know that the tutor was listening

8 Student/Tutor Communication Some things for you to think about: As a tutor, what do you say when… …a student complains to you about an instructor? …a student complains to your about another tutor? …a student seems completely overwhelmed by backlog or because they’ve come in at the last minute? … a student comes in only because his professor told him to come?

9 As a tutor, what do you say when… …you are unfamiliar with the material the student has brought to the session?

10 …you can’t answer a student’s question?

11 …you don’t tutor the course the student has come in for?

12 …you are working with a student and two more students are waiting to work with you?
