1 Academic & pastoral support Priority within College Learning & Teaching Strategy and College Plan Two specific aims: 1.Giving all students opportunities to review their academic progress and goals, with personalised guidance from a member of staff 2.Enabling resources to be targeted effectively towards those students whose needs are greatest at a particular time

2 Why should I meet my DoS? Getting maximum value from meetings between DoSs and their directees

3 What are DoS meetings for? DISCUSS

4 What are DoS meetings for? Discussing course choices & academic progress Helping students feel they belong Opportunity to improve communication, empathy & understanding between students and staff Mentoring students on their academic journeys

5 How can we develop role of DoS as academic mentor? Encouraging students to reflect on: –Transitions in student journey –Development as independent learners –Graduate attributes & employability

6 What forms can DoS meetings take? One-to-one Group meetings –Within a year group –Across year groups

7 Keeping track of student attendance & engagement

8 Two reasons why important Requirements of UKBA, funding bodies etc To provide additional support as soon as possible for students experiencing difficulties

9 UKBA attendance monitoring Registry is introducing census points for Tier 4 students Matriculation including confirmation of attendance as usual Reporting in person to Registry at further census points – 2 for UG and 3 for PG Guidance to be circulated shortly

10 How effective are our systems for early identification of students in difficulty and for effective targeting of resources? Which indicators are monitored (e.g. tutorial attendance, coursework submission, failed assessments)? Are there clear channels of communication amongst staff (e.g. SSOs, DoSs, course organisers, tutors)? Is it clear who is responsible for contacting the student? What happens if the student does not respond? Would it be helpful to have pro-forma communications to send at different stages?
