Grace Fellowship Church Pastor/Teacher - Jim Rickard www.GraceDoctrine.org Sunday, September 8, 2013

The Book of Proverbs Chapter 9 Vs. 13-18 The Rival Banquet of “Folly” is Offered!

Regarding the Adulterous Woman we are told of: Her Character, vs. 13. Her Preparation, vs. 14. Her Invitation, vs. 15. Her Prey, vs. 16. Her Message, vs. 17. Her Outcome, vs. 18.

Her Prey, vs. 16. “Naïve and lacking heart.” Cf. Prov 6:32; 7:7; 9:4. Those who do not have Bible Doctrine resident within the right lobe (heart) of their soul.

Principle: The spiritually immature must be extra cautious about their associations and how they spend their time, Satan is waiting to capture them with lies and deception, and their emotions.

Her Message, vs. 17. “Stolen water” is an incomplete metaphor for adulterous “sexual pleasure.” Cf. Prov 2:17; 5:9, 15; 6:30- 35; 7:19.

“Is sweet” MATHOQ, מָתַק Figuratively of evil as tasting deceptively sweet. Cf. Job 20:12, “Though evil is sweet in his mouth he hides it under his tongue.”

“Bread” Another metaphor for unlawful and sinful pleasures, sexual gratification. Cf. Prov 30:20.

Prov 30:20, “This is the way of an adulterous woman: she eats and wipes her mouth, and says, “I have done no wrong”.”

“Pleasant” - NAEM, נָעֵם, “To be pleasant, sweet, or beautiful.” Adultery is pleasant to the sinner and delightful to his depraved taste. Cf. Prov 4:16-17.

Figuratively, “Water” = the Word of God, Eph 5:26, and the Holy Spirit, Acts 1:5; 10:47; 11:16. “Bread” = the Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Cor 11:24.

What is being stolen is the Word of God from our hearts, our fellowship with the Spirit and our walk with our betrothed the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Folly” tries to compensate for her shortcomings by the attraction of the secret and hidden, of the unusual and strange.

Her Outcome, vs. 18 “Dead” - RAPHAIM, רְפָאִים Cf. Prov 2:18; 21:16. “Dead spirits” in Sheol, Job 26:5.

During the OT times all dead people, believers and unbelievers, went to Sheol שְׁאוֹל, (Hades in the NT), cf. Luke 16:19-31.

Old Testament Believers Unbelievers throughout history until the Great White Throne Judgement Old Testament Saints upon their death waited in Paradise Old and New Testament unbelievers go here upon their death. Luke 16:19-31

Old Testament Believers Unbelievers throughout history until the Great White Throne Judgement Taken to Heaven at Christ’s triumphal procession! Old and New Testament unbelievers go here upon their death. Eph 4:8

Unbelievers throughout history until the Great White Throne Judgement Old and New Testament unbelievers go here upon their death.

Great White Throne Judgement

The Lake of Fire Rev 20:13-14 Rev 20:13-14 The Second Death Great White Throne Judgement

“Depths” - ‏OMEQ, עֹמֶק, Tells us that Sheol is inside planet earth, Prov 25:3

“Folly” allures her victims with the half-truth that sin gives pleasure, cf. Heb 11:25, but, like Satan, she denies the connection between sin and death, cf. Gen 3:4.

Prov 21:16, “A man who wanders from the way of understanding will rest in the assembly of the dead.”

“And he does not know” They are willfully oblivious to “wisdom’s” fundamental insight that the God of Justice and Righteousness upholds a moral order; He rewards righteousness with life, and wickedness with the Sin Unto Death, 1 Cor 11:30.

If one evaluates his lifestyle as foolish and turns aside to “wisdom’s” house, he is wise and becomes worthy of life.

We prove ourselves wise by persevering in the right path when tested.

Grace Offering Prov 3:9-10, “Honor the LORD from your wealth and from the first of all your produce; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will overflow with new wine.”
