Using Text

The Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) language file format is used to transfer PostScript language artwork between applications, and it is supported by most illustration and page-layout programs. Typically, EPS files represent single illustrations or tables that are placed onto a host page, but an EPS file can also represent a complete page. Because they are based on the PostScript language, EPS files can contain both vector and bitmap graphics. Like PostScript language files, early versions of EPS files contain only grayscale vector bitmap graphics, whereas later versions support color graphics and compressed bitmap images. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PostScript language

Text Non-editableEditable HeaderParagraph Raster or Vector

Vector or raster? Try to keep text vector for as long as possible or even better, keep it vector…. Can use raster, but text cannot be resized, rescaled, or rotated, after it has been rasterized…

Editing Text Photoshop Vector/ breakapart/ Raster Illustrator Vector/breakapart (called create outlines) Flash Vector/break apart

Type Effects: (P)(I) Scaling (P)(I) Rotating (P)(I) Type as graphic object (break apart) (I) Area Type (I) Wrapped Type (I) Vertical Type (I)Path type (P) Warp Type Paragraph effects Header effects Shared (P)(I) Container text (P)Type layer styles (P)(I) Type drop shadow (P)(I) Standard edits…kerning, leading,

Paragraph Concerns Justification Left Center Right This block of text is justified along the left edge all the text is line up perfectly on that edge and is therefore ragged on the right. This block of text is justified along the center all the text is line up perfectly through the center and is therefore ragged on the right.and left This block of text is justified along the Right edge all the text is line up perfectly on that edge and is therefore ragged on the left. LeadingColumns Paragraphs Other Paragraph Concerns

Serif A face that has marks or flourishes at the extremities of the letters Sans-Serif A face that has no marks or flourishes at the extremities of the letters A A Type Attributes

Font Family A complete set of characters, letters and symbols of a particular typeface design Style or emphasis Size Bold or italicized The physical size of the text in points for print 72 points to one pica, pixels for web

Kerning Leading Tracking The space between certain pairs of letters, for instance letters that overhang. The space between lines of text The space between all the letters. Baseline shift An invisible base on which all the characters rest. Type Attributes

Kerning LT

Leading Leading Type

Tracking Tracking is space in between all letters

Baseline shift A A

Postscript Device independent text format each font has two suitcases or folders one for onscreen display and the other for the actual printing. It describes the outlines in terms of vectors.

Postscript two types Adobe licensed fonts are called type 1 postscript Other postscript fonts are called type three

similar to Postscript but with a different mathematical basis Based on quadratic curves Truetype fonts: Only one folder or suitcase
