2 What is the Covenant of Mayors` Initiative? Initiative launched by the European Union in 2009 to address the issue of climate change at the municipal level Local- and regional authorities voluntarily commit themselves to increase energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources Covenant signatories aim to reduce their CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020 Signatories commit to develop Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAP)

3 Some key figures (January 2013) 4750 city-signatories representing over 205 millions of inhabitants 1500 SEAPs submitted by signatories identified opportunities for 140 mil. tons/CO 2 savings every year

4 More then 75% of energy is consumed in the cities. Cities need to understand the consumption and manage the energy.
