Wednesday, October 7 th  Take out your packets  Checking: transition metals  Keep working and calling me over for check-ins!

Quiz tomorrow  You should be able to:  Identify the number of core electrons, valence electrons, and electron shells in a given atom  Explain what an ion is  Determine the charge (sign and number) on an ion  Explain how an ion got that charge (e.g. sodium loses one electron for a +1 charge)  Draw electron shell diagrams  Create formulas for and name ionic compounds  Including polyatomic ions and transition metals

Periodic Tables  Remember that we can determine the number of valence electrons, and as such, the charge of the corresponding ion of an element in the main group of the periodic table  Label each column of the periodic table with the charge the atoms form when they ionize  1A, 2A, 3A, 5A, 6A, 7A only!  Instead of laminating, I am giving you sheet protectors so you can add notes as desired

Transition metals  We can’t determine the charge on a transition metal just by looking at the periodic table  Many transition metals can form more than one ion  In the name, we use roman numerals to indicate the charge on the transition metal  List on the back of your periodic table

Polyatomic Ions  “Family” of elements that DOES NOT break apart  Charges apply to all atoms as a group – not one atom  Names, formulas, and charges are on the back of your periodic table  Use parentheses when you have more than one of them!
