1 Unit 3: Nomenclature Chapter 4
Nomenclature: How we name compounds! Notes will be checked Thursday 11/5 (sections 4.1) – 10 points practice Tuesday 11/10 (sections 4.2) – 10 points practice You need 80% practice grade to retake test or to get extra help. Test 11/12 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

2 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4
Unit 3 Exam HS-PS1-2: Explain reaction of valence electrons and periodic trends. Everything you need to know and all notes is found in chapter 4 of your book. Test questions will mimic practice problems assigned in book. No retakes unless practice is 80% or higher

3 What you will be able to do!
Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4 What you will be able to do! Test Date: 11/12/15 Name/write formulas binary for type 1 compounds Name/write formulas binary for type 2 compounds Name/write formulas binary for type 3 compounds Name/write formulas for polyatomic ion compounds Name/write formulas for acids

4 Section 4.1 Part A – Naming Binary Compounds type 1 p. 94-97
Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4 Section 4.1 Part A – Naming Binary Compounds type 1 p Start on page 94 What is a binary ionic compound? (1) What is a type 1 binary ionic compound? (2) What is a type 2 binary ionic compound? (3) Look at table I have noted some charges of ion that are unique! What are the charges of the following? (4) Hydrogen Hydride Silver (transition metal) What are the rules for naming type I ionic compounds? (5) AS GROUP – Example 4.1 on page 97 (6) Complete “Practice Problem Exercise 4.1” on page 97 and hand in at end of class (5 point practice)

5 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4
Charges of ions…

6 Section 4.1 Part A – Naming Binary Compounds type 2 p. 98-102
Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4 Section 4.1 Part A – Naming Binary Compounds type 2 p What does the roman numeral mean? (7) Notice the elements in table 4.2 Does the roman numeral show what you answered above? Give an example (8) Where are most of these compounds listed with these charges found? Hence, what type of metals are they? (9) AS GROUP – practice example 4.3 on page 102 (10) Complete “Practice Problem Exercise 4.3” on page 102 and hand in at end of class (5 points practice)

7 Unit 3: Nomeclature, 4 Section 4.1 Naming binary compounds that contain only nonmetals (type III) pages What are the rules for naming type III compounds? (11) You need to memorize table 4.3 on page It is easier than you think! Write the prefixes (12) AS GROUP – Practice example 4.4 on page 105 Complete “Practice problem Exercise 4.4” on page 104 and hand in at end of class (5 point practice) Complete “practice problem exercise 4.5” on page 105 and hand in at end of class (5 point practice)

8 Section 4.1 C – Naming binary Compounds: A review p 106-108
Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4 Section 4.1 C – Naming binary Compounds: A review p What is a type 1 binary compound? (13) What is a type 2 binary compound? (14) What is a type 3 binary compound? (15) Look over chart on pages 106 and 107. Complete “Practice Problem Exercise 4.6” on page and hand in (5 point practice).

9 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4
Section 4.2 Part A Naming and writing formulas for more complex compounds p Naming compounds that contain a polyatomic ion. You DO NOT need to memorize these polyatomic ion (although many general chemistry teachers have their students do so). What is a polyatomic ion? See list of polyatomic ions on next page. You will be given these.

10 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4
Polyatomic ions

11 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4
Section 4.2 Part A Naming and writing formulas for more complex compounds Look over example 4.7 on page 111. Complete and hand in “Practice Problem Exercise 4.7” on page 111 and hand in. Complete and hand in “Practice Problem Exercise 4.8” on page 112 and hand in.

12 Section 4.2 Part B Naming Acids Page 113-115
Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4 Section 4.2 Part B Naming Acids Page What is an acid? What are the rules for naming acids? Look over example 4.9 on page 115. Complete and hand in “Practice Problem Exercise 4.9” on page 115 and hand in.

13 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4
Unit 3 Review work Complete and hand in Section 4.1 review questions on page 108 Complete and hand in Section 4.1 review questions on page 116
