4 5. SOIL PREP – Spade 1 st to a depth of 12” Till – As deeply as possible Do not work clay when wet! Incorporate 3” of organic matter 60 to 80lbs of manure per 100 sq. ft. - other organic matter or Expanded Shale

5 Testing soil for Clay content - Ribbon method

6 Compost Horse Manure

7 Mulched leaves on tarp Grass Clippings

8 Raised Beds Spacing Saving Bed area along fence

9 6. WATER – Before planting After planting During the growth cycle as needed 7. HARVEST – Depends on proper variety selection Handling during growth cycle and after harvest

11 Short Carrot Varieties – Best for clay soils

12 Icicle Radish

13 Cauliflower is also a bloom

14 Cauliflower tied up to prevent blanching or sun scald Cauliflower - Self blanching

21 Remember that Fall Gardens take less Weeding Watering Working in the heat None or few insect and disease problems Most of all Have fun!!!
