1 A Model For Success Payson Seymour High School

2  Brainstorm any and all businesses to which students may have connections. Try to get a contact name.  Maintain an ongoing database of businesses.  Obtain the vendor list from the district business office. Ask for contact name.  Email all coaches, sponsors, parent organizations, etc. and find out who they do business with.

3  Have Students create a business card to include in letters sent to potential businesses  Include school name, address, phone, fax, and logo  Include student name  Include ad costs  Print on card stock or business card paper. It now has the feel of professional.

4  Have students peruse the master list of businesses and select ten with which they have a connection.  Review the list and negotiate ad assignments among students. (This takes some time.)  Have students take the ads assigned to them and verify the address via internet or phone book.

5  Print envelopes with district bulk mailing stamp on them (use Word).  Create a letter for businesses that have purchased an ad in the past.  Create a letter for businesses that are new potential advertisers.  Create a letter for vendors that do business with the school.

6  Include copy of ad from previous year for businesses that have purchased in the past.  Include of similar business (competitor) for potential new businesses.  Include student business card.

7  Role play several scenarios for ad sales.  Review how to handle rejection  Review necessary paperwork  Every business must sign off that the student was there to visit them.  If business gives student money, the student must give them a receipt  Review clothing expectations

8  Students are dressed professionally  No jeans  No short skirts or belly button shirts  No low cut tops  Take a current yearbook and place tabs on pages you want to highlight.  Have your map with plan of action  Check in with your teacher at lunch

9  Day out of school to sell ads  $$ for lunch  Over $400 in sales: earn 5% of total sales  $500 in sales: earn a free yearbook + 5% of total sales  Over $500 in sales: earn a free yearbook & 10% of total sales

10  When a business sends in the money for an ad, student sends a thank you card  If an advertiser from the previous year has not responded within two weeks, call or visit them.  When the ad is ready to send to Walsworth for publication, first send a copy to the advertiser for final approval.
