 When Jackson ran for president in 1828, his opponents labeled him a "jackass" for his populist views and his slogan, "Let the people rule"  Jackson, picked up on their name calling and turned it to his own advantage by using the donkey on his campaign posters.  During his presidency, the donkey was used to represent Jackson's stubbornness

 In 1830 Congress passed the "Indian Removal Act.“  Although many Americans were against the act, most notably Tennessee Congressman Davy Crockett, it passed anyway.  President Jackson quickly signed the bill into law. Indian Removal Act

 The Cherokees attempted to fight removal legally by challenging the removal laws in the Supreme Court  In 1832, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Cherokee in Worcester v. Georgia.  Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that the Cherokee Nation was sovereign, making the removal laws invalid.  The Cherokee would have to agree to removal in a treaty.

Andrew Jackson ignored this, saying: “John Marshall has made his law, now let him enforce it.” Indian removal began and the Cherokees were made to march out to present day Oklahoma

 Between 1838 and 1839, 17,000 Cherokee Indians, were rounded up by the U.S. Government and forced from their homes.  On the way 4,000 died from exposure and fatigue. This is why this trail is now known as the Trail of Tears.
