Force and Motion Laughlin’s Science Class

Motion Motion refers to the change in position of an object over a period of time

Distance Is the total length traveled by a moving object, usually measured in meters (m) or kilometers (km)

Speed Is the rate of change, or the average distance traveled by a moving object in a given unit of time, such as meters per second (m/s) Speed=Distance / Time

Velocity An object’s speed and direction at a given instant Velocity=distance/time The difference between Velocity and Speed –Velocity includes direction

Direction Describes the location of motion, such as north or south

Force Push or Pull of an object A force is anything that can put matter in motion

Friction Is the force caused by the rubbing of two surfaces against each other

Acceleration Change in an object’s speed or direction (Velocity/Speed) over time

Newtons 1 st Law of Motion States that an object at rest will remain at rest unless a force causes it to move and an object continues in motion along a straight line unless a force stops it or causes the object to change direction Also known as “The Law of Inertia” the tendency of matter to remain at rest or in uniform motion unless acted on by a force.

Newtons 2 nd Law of Motion mass X acceleration = Force States that the amount of force acting on a body and the size of that body affects that body’s acceleration

Newtons 3 rd Law of Motion States that for every force there is an equal and opposite force. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Balanced Force If all the forces acting on the object are perfectly balanced against one another, they will not cause the object to move, or affect its motion if it is already moving

Unbalanced Force If the forces are not perfectly balanced, however, more force will act on one side of the object than on the other sides. This unbalanced force will change the speed or direction of the object. The object will speed up, slow down, and change its direction. An unbalanced force will put an object in motion that is at rest. A change in motion is known as Acceleration.

Energy Is the ability to do work or cause change

Kinetic Energy Is the energy of movement The amount of Kinetic Energy a moving object has depends on two factors: mass and speed. The greater an object's speed, the greater its kinetic energy; the greater its mass, the greater its kinetic energy.

Potential Energy Is the energy stored in an object, based on its position or condition Potential energy is the energy that an objects able to store because of its position or condition.

Net Force Is the overall force acting on an object
