ECE1770 Course Project: Regulatory Monitoring Patricia Hon, Master of Engineering Student Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Toronto

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 2 Problem New regulations are being put in place for energy use and building codes, but a system needs to be in place to monitor that the regulations are met. Energy Demand Profile Analyzer Static analysis tool which leverages property assessment information to estimate expected energy usage patterns and compare with actual (simulated) data. Motivation/Overview

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 3 Purpose Determine if the property is being used as it was zoned and that it is meeting regulatory requirements for its use. Additional benefits Can be used to discover illegal activities in buildings zoned incorrectly. I.e.. residential or vacant. Can increase industry's ability to optimize integrated energy efficient design. Can identify consumers who could benefit from energy efficiency incentive programs[1]. Motivation/Overview [1] Every Kilowatt Counts. http://everykilowattcounts.ca/rebates/http://everykilowattcounts.ca/rebates/

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 4 Information available from property assessment info[1]: location lot dimensions living area age of the property, adjusted for any major renovations or additions quality of construction property use Occupant information: age, gender, ownership status Other features: number of bathrooms, fireplaces, garages, pools, whether properties have water frontage, and so on. Other information can be extrapolated from comparable properties in the community to determine an assessment. Let’s reuse what we have… [1] Municipal Property Assessment Corporation. http://www.mpac.ca

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 5 Input: Property assessment info Actual energy usage profile Using property assessment info: Simulate expected annual/monthly energy usage Extrapolate possible energy usage profiles Analyse: Apply trend comparison algorithms Determine applicable incentive program Strategy

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 6 Collected typical electricity demand profiles for: Residential sector Collected typical electricity intensity values for: Residential sector Commercial sector Algorithms Coarse piece-wise average comparison across peaks and valleys Trend scaling Work completed

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 7 Collect typical energy demand profiles for: Commercial sector Industrial sector Call energy usage simulators from EDPA Algorithms Trend comparison: Fine tune Incentive program matching Work left to do

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 8 Simulators include non-electricity energy sources in generated data Simulators only provide annual/monthly usage estimates Large variance in residential energy demand profiles due to: Different types of water heating and space heating Occupation/lifestyle of home dwellers Summer and winter energy use Complex process simulating different types of commercial and industrial properties Challenges

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 9 Simulators include non-electricity energy sources in generated data Simulators only provide annual/monthly usage estimates Large variance in residential energy demand profiles due to: Different types of water heating and space heating Occupation/lifestyle of home dwellers Summer and winter energy use Complex process simulating different types of commercial and industrial properties Data Mining

ECE1770: Green Middleware Patricia Hon - Course Project 10 Related work exists in creating energy usage simulations for residential[1] and non-residential[2] building types. Monitoring systems exist on a per-building basis and are specific to the layout of each building. [3] This results in more fine-grained data and is beyond the scope of this project.
