When Mathilde asked for money to purchase a dress, she was also “wondering for how large a sum she could ask without bringing upon herself an immediate refusal and an exclamation of horror from the careful-minded clerk” (Maupassant __). This demonstrates her scheme to get the most amount of money, without concern for how it may personally damage her husband’s wishes.
