Daily Forecast 1.What is matter 2.The meaning of mass 3.How is weight different and how is it affected by gravity 4.What is volume 5.What is the basic building block of matter and what is its structure? 6.How are molecules and elements different?

Matter and Energy Section 1.1 and 1.2 Review Mr. Nigh Science 7

Matter has mass and volume Matter-anything that has mass and takes up space Matter- is made up of particles known as atoms Not everything is matter. Light and sound do not take up space or have mass Fire has mass A state of matter Known as plasma

Mass-a measure of how much matter an object contains Example-a metal spoon has greater mass than a plastic spoon An elephant has greater mass than hyena

Weight- the downward pull of an object due to gravity Mass and weight are not the same. Mass is the amount of matter. Weight describes how strongly gravity is pulling on that matter

Gravity is the force that pulls two objects with mass toward each other

Volume-the amount of space that matter in an object occupies Same volume Not same mass

ATOMS SmallestBasicbuildingblocks of all things

MOLECULES When two or more atoms bond together Diamond molecule

MoleculesAreAlwaysInMotion Solids Liquids Gases
