2 Bell Work 1. What is the volume of a box that is 10 cm long, 3 cm wide, and 2 cm high? 2. What method do you use to find the volume of an irregular shaped object?

3 1.1 Vocab Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space Mass – measure of how much matter an object has

4 1.1 Vocab Weight – the downward pull on an object due to gravity Volume – the amount of space an object takes up. (for a regular solid length x width x height)

5 Bell Work – Write down these vocab words on your bell work sheet. Particle – a very small piece of matter, such as an atom, molecule, or ion Substance – matter of a particular type. Elements, compounds, and mixtures are all substances

6 Bell Work Decide if these statements are true or false. If false correct them. 1. Substances you can see are matter, but substances you cannot see are not matter. 2. Mass and weight are the same thing. 3. Formulas can be used to calculate the volume of many solids with a regular shape.

14 1.3 Vocab Element – consists of atoms of only one type. Compound – a substance made up of 2 or more different types of atoms bonded together. Mixture – a combination of 2 or more substances. Do not combine chemically and can be separated by physical means.
