THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION By: Cerena Chiaramonte, Isaac Cortes, Armando Alvarado, Mya Barroquero,Larah Alberto CHAPTER 14 SECTION 5

In Italy, Galileo Galilei created an astronomical telescope. Setting the Scene

In 1609, he discovered… Setting the Scene

…mountains on the Moon…. Setting the Scene

… and fiery spots on the Sun… Setting the Scene

It was also said that he discovered 4 planets orbiting Earth’s moon… We could not find any pictures… Setting the Scene

Other scholars attacked him because his discoveries went against ancient views about the world. The church condemned him because his ideas were against the Church. Setting the Scene

Until the Mid 1500s, the Theory of the ancient Greek astronomer Ptolemy was accepted. Changing Views of the Universe

People thought Earth was the center of the universe, which was taught by the church and was common sense. This was viewed until the 1500s-1600s. Changing Views of the Universe

Nicolaus Copernicus published “On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres”. He posed the idea that the Universe was based around the Sun and planets too. Nicolaus Copernicus Changing Views of the Universe

Many experts rejected the revolutionary theory. Scientific knowledge and religious teachings were based on arguments developed by classical thinkers. Changing Views of the Universe

Early 1600s, there was a new approach in science. This new approach required scientists to collect and accurately measure data. A New Scientific Method

To explain data, scientists used hypotheses. Complex math calculations were used to convert the observations and experiments into scientific laws. After they reached a conclusion, they repeated it again. Sometimes, they repeated it more than once to confirm conclusions. A New Scientific Method

Step by step, discovery became known as… A New Scientific Method

At age 24, Isaac Newton formed a theory that explains why the planets move as they did. Newton ties it all together

According to one story, Newton saw an apple fall from a tree. Because of this, he wondered whether the force that pulled the apple from the tree to Earth might also control movements of the planets. Newton ties it all together

In the next 20 years, he perfected his theory by using mathematics to show that a single force keeps the planets in their orbits around the Sun, called gravity. Newton ties it all together

In 1687, Newton published “Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy”. This book explained the law of gravity and other workings of the universe. Newton ties it all together

He said nature follows uniform laws and that all motion in the universe can be measured and described mathematically. Newton also developed calculus. Newton ties it all together Motion

Many thought Newton’s work seemed to link physics and astronomy. Today, his laws are still being used. Newton ties it all together

In 1500s- 1600s, regular metal was transformed into gold. Other Scientific Advantages

Galen’s works were used by medieval physicians, but he limited the knowledge of human anatomy. Other Scientific Advantages

In 1543, Andreas Vesafius was the first person to accurately study the human anatomy. Other Scientific Advantages Andreas Vesafius Human Anatomy

Ambroise Pare developed an ointment to prevent infection and used a technique to close wounds with stitches. Other Scientific Advantages

In the early 1600s, William Harvey was the first person to explain blood circulation. Other Scientific Advantages

Anthony van Leeuwenhoek perfected the microscope and was the first to see cells and microorganisms. Other Scientific Advantages

Sciences and technology began advancing in the 1500s and certain ideas “opened the way to Enlightment of the 1700s and a growing belief in human progress”. Other Scientific Advantages
