1. Israel - Hanukkah Many people who live in Israel are Jewish. Hanukkah is the Jewish Festival of Lights that lasts eight days.

2. Israel - Hanukkah Jews celebrate Hanukkah to commemorate the Miracle of the Oil. The Hebrew word Hanukkah means “dedication.” Over 2000 years ago, in 165 BC, the Jews in Judea rebelled against their Syrian ruler, Antiochus, because he insisted that all Jewish people must worship Greek Gods.

3. Israel - Hanukkah After three hard years of fighting, the Jews defeated Antiochus and, to celebrate, they restored the Temple of Jerusalem – which had been taken over by the Syrians – and rededicated it to their God.

11. Israel - Hanukkah Playing the Dreidel Game is a Jewish tradition. In order to play the dreidel game all you need is a four-sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each side.

12. Israel - Hanukkah Players spin their dreidels to see which one will spin the longest. They win gelt, which is usually chocolate coins wrapped in either gold or silver foil.

13. Israel - Hanukkah Fried foods are the traditional fare on Hanukkah. They will serve latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (donuts).
