3 Growth, Settlement & Identity: Culture Unit Outcomes:  demonstrate an understanding of the role played by the Gaels in the Fur Trade and exploration of North Western Canada  describe and analyze forces shaping the settlement patterns of Gaels in Canada  describe the social structure of Gaelic communities and their relationship to other cultures in Canada  2.4 demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which Gaelic language, music, and oral tradition have shaped Gaelic identity

7 Subsistence Farming to Economic Diversity  From the 18 th to 19 th centuries the Scots became  Increasingly economically diversified and began to make many contributions to Canada.

8 After You Read  Explain via 3-4 summary bullet points the contributions of the Scots Gaels to your area of society: 1) Church & School 2) Politics 3) Military 4) Business 5) Literature & The Arts

9 Contributions Abound  Decades after arriving, the Scots began to flourish in Canada  Their presence was felt in all areas of society

10 Church & School  Scots = Quite Religious  Brought their religion with them  Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Anglican & Methodist  Scots valued education – many church-run schools emerged Name some schools with Scottish roots

12 Politics  Stemming from matters in Scotland – the Scots were very interested in politics  Formed local governments very early into their arrival  Eventually became a presence at all levels of government Name some famous Scottish politicians

13 Business  Can you find examples of businesses with Scottish names?  The Scots were the dominate group in terms of business in 19 th century Canada  Linked with the fur trade and almost all of Canada’ natural resource sector

14 Military  Long history in battle – in Europe and North America  Earliest engagement was Seven Years War  War of 1812  World War I & World War II  Scottish regiments = fierce & disciplined
