1 9 DEC 2014 Today we will learn: how well you can spell the words in unit 21 the elements of drama the vocabulary words we will focus on. the value of reading with tone and voice BELL ACTIVITY: TAKE OUT YOUR SPELLING WORK FOR UNIT 21. REVIEW THE WORDS FOR THE SPELLING TEST.

2 Take out your spelling work. Make sure your heading is on it. One person from each group needs to collect the spelling work and submit it to the basket. We will not be scoring your spelling work in class this week. Your spelling test will be the only grade that goes in the gradebook for spelling this week. Put your heading on a blank sheet of paper. Number 1-20 + Challenge: Clear your desk of everything else.

3 ELEMENTS OF DRAMA

4 word really well; discover where it comes from and how old is it. Ask who it hangs out with most of the time and out what the word’s job is or if it has more than one. Finally, ask about it’s family, to whom is this word closely related. It isn’t enough to read and repeat a vocabulary word; to simply know its name. You must converse with this word, become close friends, make this word your new BFF. You need to spend time getting to know the

5 Compare your short list of 20, “These are the words you need to really pay attention to and become comfortable in using them correctly because you will be quizzed on them” vocabulary terms to the Christmas Carol Glossary you were given. Mark each of the 20 official vocabulary terms on your glossary (highlight or mark a star next to each). Then copy down the definitions from the glossary onto your vocabulary list/worksheet. Teacher: (Concerned, she approaches) Good Morning, Sam Sam: (he has second more intense coughing fit, which causes the teacher to back away)What would you like us to do this morning? Teacher: (speaking loudly from across the room) Please take out your homework. Sam: (wearily, as he collapses in his seat) You bet. This day is going to be awesome.

11 THE BEGINNING OF A BEAUTIFUL CAREER Steps: 1.Pick a partner 2.Determine who will be the teacher and who will be Sam, the student. 3.Send Sam to pick up a script set. 4.In your partnerships, each student will read through his/her part silently. Then do a quick read through together. 5.Help each other to work on really creating the mood that are described in the stage directions. 6.Practice it till it is perfect. 7. SWITCH PARTNERS & SCRIPTS! When the music plays: “Sam” will return the scripts to the table & then returns. After “Sam” has returned, the “teacher” must go find another partner. The “teacher” from round one will become the Round #2 Sam, All the Sams will become “teachers”. Once you have a partner, the new “Sam” will need to go get a different color or script than they performed during the last round. Repeat steps 1-7

16 Allow students to choose partners. After modeling for students using the original set sans stage directions, have the pairs procure one of the sets (copied onto 3 different colors of paper). They are to practice the set with their partner. Then at the bell they are to switch sets with another partner set and try a second set. There is no need to do three rounds as the third round will be an attempt to find the third color. Listen in and choose students to then model each set for the entire class.
