1 Declaration of Independence (DOI) Breaking up with Britain

2 Thomas Jefferson Founder – He wrote the Declaration of Independence. Not Framer – He did not help write the Constitution.

3 What is in it? Ideals – Beliefs about what government should be. Arguments – Gives justification for breaking away from Britain. Complaints – Specific complaints against the king. Conclusion – Tells what should happen. (free and independent states)

4 Question #1 What was the purpose of the Declaration of Independence? – Pg 68, Oh yeah, it is in the title of the document! – The purpose of the DOI is to …….. The purpose of the DOI is to justify the American Revolution. (fight for freedom)

6 Question #3 What should the people do if the government is not securing rights? – Pg 70, reasons for Independence – The people should …… The people should alter or abolish destructive governments.

7 Complaints Against the King Pg 277 – Starts: He has …. There will be 18 complaints listed. – With your groups determine what each complaint says. – Use your resources to look up what you don’t know.

8 Complaints Against the King 1. He refuses to pass laws that are good and necessary. 2. He refuses to let Governors pass important laws without his approval. 3. He refuses to pass laws for largely populated areas unless the people give up the right to representation 4. He calls meeting in weird distant places. 5. He has done away with state governments.

9 Complaints Against the King 6. He messed with the government so much there is corruption within the states. 7. He refuses to allow states to grow by not allowing people to become citizens or obtain land. 8. He refuses to give power to judges. 9. He controls the judges jobs and salaries. 10. He created jobs just to harass the colonists.

10 Complaints Against the King 11. He keeps armies in the cities in times of peace. 12. He makes laws to protect the British. – Quartering soldiers, fake/mock trials 13. He cut off our trade with taxes, not given us trial by jury, and sent us to Britain for trials. 14. He abolished laws and created fake/puppet governments to control us.

11 Complaints Against the King 15. He suspended our laws, waged war on us, and is trying to destroy our lives. 16. He hired and transported people (Hessians) to the colonies to destroy us. 17. He captured our citizens and is forcing them to fight against us. 18. He created uprisings in the colonies and made Indians mad at those who settle on new land.
