From Dream to Reality: Emerging Technologies Now and When? Jan Tuchman, Editor-in-Chief Engineering News-Record

Ripped from the Headlines, ENR Style Construction science fiction, projects of the future and features about the latest technology, are all part of ENR’s process of exploring ideas for the industry’s future.

NOW…

Today: 3D Printing is Here at Small Scale 360 Architecture (now HOK) put 3D printing to work to win the Atlanta Falcons Stadium commission. A scale model with a motorized roof showed off the kinetic structure that appears to open like a camera shutter. Five 3D printers produced the operable model in time for the presentation.

Today: Drones Access Hard to Reach Places Firms like Asymmetric Technologies are navigating the FAA rules to win exemptions to do dam, bridge and other civil works inspections with drones. It’s a tool in the the inspector’s toolbox, says the firm’s CEO Brian Borkowski. Watch the Flying High Video from ENR.com

Today: Large-Scale Energy Storage Is Possible Red Lion Energy Center will produce 27 MW for Delmarva Power & Light Co. in Delaware. Its refrigerator sized cabinets house Bloom Energy Servers—natural gas powered fuels cells that use solid-oxide in Bloom’s patented process.

Today: Intelligent Compactor Gets it Just Right Volvo machine evalutes the state of pavement compaction in real time to avoid over- or under- compacting —extending roadway life.

Today: Internet of Things—Bridges That Talk Back Sensors monitor earthquake motions at the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

WHEN?

Far Future: Movies Ideas Stretch Our Imagination

Near: Wearable Computing Nears Market Readiness But advanced tools like the Golden-i by Koplin Corp. (now Motorola) are farther in the future. Watch the Golden-I video from ENR.com

Near: Robots Take Over Awkward Jobs? NLink’s mobile overhead drilling robot made its first sale this spring.

1-2 Years: UAV Guides Itself, Navigating in Real Time CMU’s Ariel Robotic Infrastructure Analyst (ARIA) collects 40,000 x-y-z points per second to building a point cloud of its surroundings.

Five Years: New Materials Change the Landscape Delft University’s Henk Jonkers patents “self-healing concrete.”

Two Years: 3D Printers Tackle Full-Scale Structures MX3D will 3D Print a bridge over a canal in Amsterdam. Watch their video.

More and More and More Ideas… Nano-engineered catalysts, membranes and light-activated materials to make water treatment affordable and portable Bio-geotechnical approaches to boosting the resiliency of infrastructure Autonomous vehicles Automated plan checking Tackling political and institutional barriers
