2 For many, the loss of innocence is a gradual process. However, some people are forced to face grim situations that can instantly rob them of that innocence. Alice Walker uses symbolism and imagery to convey this theme in the short story “The Flowers”. In “The Flowers,” the author Alice Walker uses cheerful images such as flowers and the summertime to symbolize Myop’s initial innocence. As the story progresses, Walker employs imagery to emphasize a shift in the mood from a light-hearted setting to a gloomy setting. With these techniques, Walker is able to convey a theme of loss of innocence from the beginning of the story to the end. Hook Vague thesis No Context Solid thesis No Hook Weak context

3 Children have an innocence about them that is genuine and humble. They have no preconceived notions as they are not yet tainted by experience. However, as they grow into adulthood, they lose that innocence. Once that vulnerability is gone, they must face the darkness of reality. Myop, the ten-year-old main character of The Flowers by Alice Walker, gains this new impression of the real world. Throughout the story, she finds a skeleton in the woods which makes her question the world outside her childish, fairytale life. Therefore, Alice Walker uses figurative language to highlight that exposure to the cruelty of the world forces children to mature into adults. 4 Your intro should include… 1.A hook that contextualizes the topic (loss of innocence) 2.Context for the story: a brief summary of the parts of the story that are important to your thesis 3.A clear thesis statement. If you plan on mentioning figurative language devices, explain how they are used to convey the theme. When you are finished revising your intro raise your hand and I will come and check it. If you don’t need to make further corrections, start revising the rest of your essay.
