3. Simple Sentences A simple sentence is the most basic sentence you can write. It is one independent clause. It has a complete subject and a complete predicate. –The subject is who or what the sentence is about. –The predicate includes the verbs and any other parts of the sentence. –A simple sentence can have more than one subject and verb.

4. Simple Sentences I ran. –I is the subject. Ran is the verb. I ran up the stairs. –I is the subject. Ran is the verb. Up the stairs is a prepositional phrase. I ran up the stairs and fell back down. –I is the subject. Ran and fell are the two verbs. Up the stairs is a prepositional phrase. Back down tells where the person went; therefore, they are adverbs.

5. Compound Sentences Compound sentences are two independent clauses put together. You can join independent clauses two ways. –Semicolon ; –Comma + a FANBOYS If you use a semicolon, you do not need a comma and FANBOYS.
