1. What are the big messages from your project? - many zooplankton species remain to be discovered - integrated morphological and molecular systematic analysis - global coverage can be achieved through cooperative efforts 2. What specific accomplishments/highlights do you anticipate by 2010? - sampled many regions of the world oceans - discovery of many new species - workshops improve taxonomic expertise - database is resource for researchers and students 3. Are there examples of how your data/output/analysis has been applied? 4. Is there a reasonable chance that they may be used by 2010? 5. In what year do you anticipate your major manuscript outputs or other kinds of tangible outputs (major conferences, movies, etc.) to be released? CoML Framework

Building the picture of biodiversity: - integration and synthesis of data and information to build a global view of zooplankton biodiversity, - assess completeness of the information - identify any remaining holes Integrating across realms: coordination with other CoML field projects is our primary approach. Working with FMAP: engage FMAP in modeling global plankton populations to help CMarZ optimize analysis of diversity patterns based on opportunistic sampling. Contributions to CoML 2010: group meetings focused on topics, taxa, or geographic regions. CoML Synthesis

Sustained, dynamic OBIS CMarZ database, dynamically-assembled Species Pages Proven technologies DNA barcodes, remote DNA-based detection systems, instrumentation for sampling and observing Public interest in marine life Photographs and press coverage Centers of excellence in developing countries Cooperating projects in India & China, build capacity for taxonomic analysis, distributed DNA barcoding centers New generation of oceanographers Graduate students, post-doctoral fellows CoML Legacies

Indicators of ecosystem health Baseline biodiversity assessment Ocean observing systems Marine bioinvasions Fundamental science issues - elemental cycles, - patterns of endemism, - extinction of species in the ocean - significance of rare species CMarZ Applications

CMarZ Tasks Dec/2006 – Oct/2007
