1. Describe the Silk Road’s location and the goods that were traded along it. Land Route that crossed Asia Connected China to the Mediterranean Sea Many goods were traded -Major one= SILK -Also= spices, tea, porcelain, gold

3. How did the fall of the Western Roman Empire impact Europe? Led to the Dark (Middle) Ages Many of the old (Greek and Roman) arts were lost Little formal education Economic instability was widespread

4. Define feudalism Political and social order that developed during the Middle Ages when the royal govt. could no longer defend the subjects. Nobles offered protected for service. When this system broke down, it caused a rise of capitalism and the growth of the middle class.

7. How did the Mongols affect the regions they conquered? China- United the country and stabilized the government. Persia- Heavy taxation destroyed the economy and decreased the population. Russia- United Russia indirectly (they united to rebel). Caused MOSCOW to emerge as a new political and cultural center.

9. Compare and contrast the fall of the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty Both had a centralized government, built roads and walls, conquered many people and had a large population. Not in Common- Rome fell apart and was never restored. Han fell apart but was restored by the next dynasty (Tang)

10. Explain the impacts of Ancient Athens and Rome on modern society. Ancient Athens- Idea of a democracy, also civic duty before individual interests. Rome- Origins of a democratic republic, also architecture (the arc, use of concrete)

12. What were the Crusades and how did they affect medieval Europe? Crusades were an attempt by Christian knights to take back the Holy Land (Jerusalem) Affect: Decline in church power, growth of the middle class, increase in trade with the Middle East, introduced new weapons to Europe

13. Explain the significance of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 A French noble takes the throne of England and becomes King The feudal system was brought from France to England William introduced the first census to England (the Doomsday Book)

14. Describe the role of the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages. Be sure to include any changes it went through from the fall of Western Rome to the end of the Middle Ages. At First- church has almost total power and enormous wealth, controlled the lands around them. Acted as a stabilizing force during a time of weak governments. At the End- Because of several reasons, the church loss power and wealth to new political leaders (kings)
