1. ABSTRACT LDR based illumination control system is designed for energy efficiency. It includes high efficiency fixtures, day lighting automatic controls that make adjustments based on conditions such as occupancy. This system is connected to ARM LPC2148. Present paper deals with design and development of a LDR based illumination control system which is controlled by ARM LPC2148 microcontroller and power line communication.

2. OBJECTIVES The objective of this paper is to survey WSN for the home/office automation and presents the different technologies used, topology used, user interfacing techniques etc.

3. BLOCK DIAGRAM

4. METHODOLOGY: The output of LDR is connected to Comparator this lighting model is controlled by Comparator which receives the commands from the LDR. The output of the LDR varies according to presence of light from the environment. Depending on the presence of light from the environment the illumination of light is controlled by the ARM controller.

5. ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES:  ADVANTAGES: 1. Unnecessary wastage of electricity can be controlled to a greater extend. 2. Maximum power can be saved. 3. Selectable Sensitivity, Sensitivity can be adjusted to match installation requirements. 4. Wide supply voltage range: 3.0V to 15V in COMPARATOR.  DISADVANTAGES: 1.High capital expenditure required to invest in automation (an automated system can cost millions of dollars to design, fabricate, and install). 2.A higher level of maintenance needed than with a manually operated machine, and a generally lower degree of flexibility in terms of the possible products as compared with a manual system.

6.APPLICATIONS: 1. Light saving system 2. Counter dependent automatic switching system of room. 3. Camera Exposure Control 4. Auto Slide Focus - dual cell 5. Photocopy Machines - density of toner 6. Colorimetric Test Equipment 7. Densitometer 8. Electronic Scales - dual cell 9. Automatic Gain Control – modulated light source 10. Automated Rear View Mirror

7. CONCLUSION: Thus we provide a smart lighting system using ARM 7 microcontroller which helps to reduce energy usage and cost by eliminating over – illumination and unnecessary waste. This system provides centralized control of all lighting within a home or commercial building, allowing easy implementation of scheduling, occupancy control, daylight harvesting and more through power line communication. This system also supports demand response and will automatically dim and take advantage of demand response incentives and cost savings.
