Background Research Paragraphs Paragraph 1 Paragraph 1: Introduction to your Science Fair question and an explanation of what information you need to research before starting your experiment. Paragraph 2 Paragraph 2: Answers to your research questions and any other important information related to your Science Fair question (definitions, key words, etc.).

Paragraph 1 Sentence Starters for Paragraph 1 Introduction to your Science Fair question and an explanation of what information you need to research before starting your experiment. Our group’s Science Fair question is, “ ___________________.” In order to conduct an experiment, we first need to find information about _______________________________. One question we have is ______________________________. This is important because ______________________________. Other information we need to know is ____________________ because ________________________.

Paragraph 1 Example Introduction to your Science Fair question and an explanation of what information you need to research before starting your experiment. Our group’s Science Fair question is, “Does the color of a light bulb affect plant growth?” In order to conduct an experiment, we first need to find information about plants and light. One question we have is, “What does a bean plant need to survive?” This is important because we need to know what our plant requires so we can design our experiment to give our plant the essential materials. Another question we have is, “How does the color of light change its properties?” This question is important because we need to find out if light changes when the color changes so we can form an educated hypothesis about whether or not the color of a light bulb affects plant growth. Other information we need to know involves photosynthesis and light bulbs. We need to have a better idea of how plants make food and grow, since our experiment is about plant growth and plants grow when they make food. Also, we also need to know how light bulbs works, since we will be changing the light bulb colors to see their affects on plants.

Paragraph 2 Sentence Starters for Paragraph 2 Answers to your research questions and any other important information related to your Science Fair question (definitions, key words, etc.). After researching in book and print sources …. An answer to the question about ____________ is… We discovered that… Our group learned… One website told us… The book titled, “___________” explained that…. A key word in our experiment is… An important word to know for this experiment is ____________. It means…

Paragraph 2 Example Answers to your research questions and any other important information related to your Science Fair question (definitions, key words, etc.). Our group learned a lot about plants and lights as a result of our research. We discovered that plants need many things to survive, but some of the main components are soil, sunlight, water, and nutrients. One website told us that a bean plant takes about two weeks to grow. An answer to the question about how the properties of light change when the color changes is that the wavelength of light differs depending on the color. For example, red light has a wavelength closer to 200 nanometers while violet light has a wavelength closer to 400 nanometers. A key word in our experiment is photosynthesis. The book titled, “Plants: How They Grow,” explained that photosynthesis and light are closely connected. It stated that chloroplasts absorb different amounts of light depending on the wavelength. If light is easily absorbed, then more photosynthesis can take place. After researching a little more, we learned that plants often respond differently to different colors of light being shone on them. Chlorophyll reflects green light but absorbs other colors such as blue and red.
