Centre for Architectural Heritage (IWAN) 2000 - 2012 Centre for Architectural Heritage (IWAN) Center for Architectural Heritage (IWAN) To protect and maintain cultural and architectural heritage in Gaza Governorates. To help in renovating the historic buildings to be reused for various activities. These buildings, in most cases, can be rehabilitated to use as cultural or youth centers. To establish a technical basement for implementing studies and projects to conserve the Palestinian historical heritage. Objectives 25

Centre for Architectural Heritage (IWAN) 2000 - 2012 Location of Gaza Strip It is located south west of Palestine on the Eastern coast of the Mediterranean sea. It is the link between Asia and Africa continents. It is about 41 km long, and between 6 and 12 km wide, with a total area of 360 square km. The Gaza Strip acquired its current boundaries at the cessation of fighting in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War The territory takes its name from Gaza, its main city. 2000 - 2012 Centre for Architectural Heritage (IWAN) History of Gaza The known history of Gaza spans 4,000 years. It was ruled, destroyed and repopulated by various kingdoms, empires, and peoples. It was first built by Canaanites about 4000 years ago then it was ruled by - Ancient Egyptians - The Philistines - Persians - Greeks - Romans - Byzantines - Muslims

Aims of IWAN Centre - Preserving the architectural and archaeological sites in Gaza strip. - Increasing the public awareness of the importance of the local heritage. - Training local staff on architectural heritage preservation. - Preparing studies and researches related to local heritage. - Reviving local handcrafts and ornaments.
