Phylum Arthropoda Name Means: “Jointed-Foot” Trilobita Examples: trilobites, now extinct Crustacea Examples: shrimp, crabs, lobsters, barnacles… Chelicerata Examples: spiders, scorpions, mites, ticks, horseshoe crabs… Uniramia Examples: centipedes, millipedes, insects

The Basics… Symmetry: All arthropods possess bilateral symmetry. Body Openings: Two (mouth & anus)

Classifying Characteristics All arthropods possess: Segmented Bodies: Head, thorax, abdomen, etc. Jointed Appendages: Legs, antennae, etc. Exoskeleton : Outer shell for protection & support. Cephalization: Brain, compound eyes, feeding structures, etc. Complex Body Systems: Digestive, respiratory, reproductive, nervous, circulatory, etc.

Reproduction & Feeding All arthropods reproduce sexually. Most often internal fertilization & development. Insects undergo metamorphosis…egg, larva, pupa, adult… Arthropods obtain food in many ways. Herbivores, carnivores, parasites. Mouthparts are specialized for food types.

Importance… You and your partner should read Insects & People found on page 764 in the textbook. Write at least six reasons why arthropods are important…some might be good, some might be bad.

Crabs, Spiders, Bugs, Bees, Lobsters, Shrimp, Beetles, Centipede, Butterfly, Mosquito. A group of videos will pop up for each group. Pick and watch one video from each group. Explain the video as an interesting extra for arthropods. Do this for five different videos and interesting extras.
