Biomes Eric Angat Environmental Science

The United States is composed of the following biomes: Temperate forest, grassland or prairie, desert, and Chaparral or shrubland. Prairie Warm, mild winters, hot, dry summers, and a little rain characterize the chaparral biome. Shrubland. mountains

1. What is a Biome? Biome is a large area populated by characteristic plant and animal life.

2. What are the eight Types of Biomes? 1. Tropical Rainforest ( near equator) 2. Tropical deciduous forest 3. desert 4. Temperate deciduous forest 5. Temperate deciduous forest 6. Grassland 7. Tundra 7. Taiga/ Boreal NC’s biome Coldest biome Almost no rainfall type of biome Trees change colors.

3. Describe a Desert biome. hot, dry region with very limited precipitations. little plant life. Very hot during the day but cold at night.

4. Describe Grassland biome. region with abundant plant life, but few trees. A grassland in the Antelope Valley, CaliforniaAntelope ValleyCalifornia

5. What are savannas and prairies? The savannas of the African continent The prairies of North America. They are grasslands.

0 degree or EQUATOR A savanna is a rolling grassland scattered with shrubs and isolated trees, which can be found between a tropical rainforest and desert biome. Not enough rain falls on a savanna to support forests. Savannas are also known as tropical grasslands.

6. Describe Temperate rainforest. area with heavy rainfall and lots of trees, mostly coniferous.

7. Describe Deciduous forest. area populated by broadleaf trees, with fairly mild winters. Trees change colors.

8. Describe Coniferous forest (Taiga). area populated by evergreen trees, with fairly cold winters.

9. Where are tropical rainforest located? Rainforests are located near the equator. Fifty seven percent of all tropical rainforests are found in Latin America. One third of the world's tropical rainforests are in Brazil.

Tropical rainforest are found near the equator. This biome receives a lot of rain and has most variety and number of living things.

Freshwater Biome From left: Pescadero Marsh, California; coastal marsh at Umpqua Dunes, Oregon; trees and bogs on Esther Island, Alaska.

11. Describe Boreal forests (taiga). Boreal forests, or taiga, represent the largest terrestial biome. Occuring between 50 and 70 degrees north latitudes, boreal forests can be found in the broad belt of Eurasia and North America:

0 degree or EQUATOR Taiga biome is one that has very long and cold winters. They summers are short and they are cool in temperature. Trees are conifers, like evergreens. Taiga or coniferous forest

From left: taiga in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada; forest west of Stockholm, Sweden. Taiga, boreal forest

12. Describe tundra biome. Earth's coldest, harshest biomes. Tundra ecosystems are treeless regions found in the Arctic and on the tops of mountains.

0 degree or EQUATOR The Tundra is the coldest biome in the world. Also, the Tundra biome is a wasteland with permanently frozen dirt called permafrost. The Tundra biome types include the Alpine Tundra, Arctic Tundra, and the Antarctic Tundra. The Tundra biome is located mainly in the North Pole, South Pole, and Antarctica. The origin of the word "Tundra" comes from Finnish tunturi meaning treeless plain.

Antarctic Biome It is the coldest, windiest, and driest biome on Earth. There is not a lot of life on the Antarctic land. All of the animals have adapted to the cold conditions. Antarctica is considered to have its own biome since there is no precipitation in Antarctica, and is still very cold. It has high altitude temperatures like an ice biome, but is still colder than any other biome. There are also periods of no sun rise or sun set. South Pole
