2.  Today, migration has become highly complex and involves not only refugees, but also millions of migrants, who are usually searching for work and a better life. Smugglers worldwide have made fortunes preying on the desperation of these people and regularly try to breach the eastern borders of the EU.

3.  Refugees and migrants are not the same. Migrants move to find opportunities (work & better life) for themselves and their families. Refugees must move in order to save their lives or preserve their freedom. UNHCR makes sure that these two groups are never confused and never turned away at a border.

5.  We would like to tell you about the problem of refugees in our country. The problem is not very important in Poland yet, but there are more and more asylum-seekers in Poland every year. Most of them came from Russia Federation, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Syria.

6.  In 2012, about 11.000 applied for asylum in Poland. Polish authorities granted 106 people refugee status and about 500 people complementary protection. In Central Europe, the number of people who received refugee status or another from of international protection varied between some 3,500 and 4,400 people per year between 2007 and 2009.

8.  Refugees have no protection from their own state. What is more, their own governments threaten to persecute them. They may be condemned to death or they have to live in an intolerable shadows, without support and without any rights.
