Communication The best way to contact me or let me know of changes is by email Newsletter is monthly and will be sent via email distribution list and accessible on our class website. Look for frequent updates on our class website Classroom website!!! Let’s Explore

Reading Reading groups and individual conferencing District scope and sequence and our reading curriculum- Making Meaning Time for students to be independently engaged in meaningful literacy activities (Reader’s workshop) F&P (Fountas and Pinnell) reading assessment to find students “just right” level and guide reading instruction in the classroom

Making Meaning District reading curriculum focused on comprehension Fits with our reader’s workshop model Aligns with common core Research based Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students. We have and will continue to spend our first weeks working intensely on building our reading and writing stamina, learning the behaviors of reader’s workshop and fostering our classroom community.

What Does Reader’s Workshop Look Like? 15 minute focus lesson 20 minute read to self and response 15 minute spelling/ word work session 15 minute choice session 10 minute share circle and reading discussion

Choosing Good Fit Books Use the I PICK acronym to help pick books I - Choose a book P- Purpose- why do I want to read it? I- Interest -does it interest me? C- Comprehend -Am I understanding what I am reading? K- I know -most of the words

Comprehension Strategies Making connections Sequencing Monitoring for meaning Story elements Questioning Predicting Visualizing Inferring Determining importance Summarizing Text features Literary/ narrative devices (simile, alliteration)

At Home… Children need to see people important to them reading in order to see reading as important! Let your kids see you reading, even magazines and newspapers Develop family reading time where everyone reads Read a chapter book together Ask questions and discuss books while reading. Have a “home library” with just right books that your students are interested in

Scholastic Book Orders A great way to build your home library is through scholastic book orders. Scholastic offers great selection and great prices with the goal to get books in kids hands and get them reading. How do I order? *This year orders will be available online only *Order’s will be available on a monthly basis *Website: http://clubs.scholastic.com/http://clubs.scholastic.com/ Class activation code: GQJMV

2 nd Grade Homework The goal of homework in 2 nd grade is to build good study habits and teach responsibility 2 nd graders should spend 20 min. a night on homework. Reading should be in addition. If your student works for 20 min. and can’t finish, just write me a note telling me why it is not complete- we don’t want homework to become frustrating Homework is not meant to be challenging, but reinforce skills learned in school Pick a homework area and set routines Vacation during school days
