Take a Short constructive response from the handout Today's Agenda 1.Finish station work 2.Short Constructive Response 3.Hoover and the New Deal 4.New Deal Project Today's Objective SWBAT explain the New Deal administrations put in by the Roosevelt administration to help the United States out of the New Deal in order to evaluate the role of the federal government in the New Deal.

2 Station Work  You will have 15 minutes to finish working on the assignment from your last station  Station 1 – get your portfolio  Station 3 – grab a computer  If you are done early, begin reading the prompt and responding to your short constructive response

3 Short constructive response  Follow along with the text while listening to the lyrics of “We’d like to thank you Herbert Hoover.”  Prompt: Determine how the author use of words and phrases depicts America during the Great Depression. Consider the following:  What time were they referring to in the phrase “Prosperity was ‘round the corner?”  What image of America is do these lyrics portray? What words and phrases from the song give you that image?

4 Roosevelt and the New Deal Hoover  Republican party believed that the economy would recover on its own Roosevelt  More willing to use government intervention to solve economic problems.

5 First 100 Days  Americans of all political persuasions demanded immediate action be taken when Roosevelt entered office  Congress granted every request Roosevelt presented. This time is know as the First 100 days.  Congress passed 15 major acts to resolve the economic crisis, setting a pace for new legislation that has never been equaled.  Together these programs made up the First New Deal

6 Women’s role in the Roosevelt Administration  Francis Perkins was the first women to serve in a President’s cabinet.  Eleanor Roosevelt was an important advisor on domestic policies for the New Deal.

7 New Deal Alphabet Soup  AAA-Agricultural Adjustment Act  NIRA-National Industrial Recovery Act  CCC-Civilian Conservation Corps  FERA-Federal Emergency Relief Administration  PWA-Public Works Administration  CWA-Civil Works Administration  SEC-Securities and Exchange Commission  A major result of President Roosevelt's New Deal was an expansion in the role of Federal Power

8 New Deal Issues  National Industry Recovery Act was a piece of New Deal legislation that was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court  Roosevelt pushed for the reorganization of the Supreme Court but it failed to become law

9 Those against the New Deal  Southern republicans were the least likely to be a part of the new Deal coalition  Enemies of the New Deal were often called Fascists  A major criticism of President Roosevelt’s programs to combat the Great Depression was that these programs made people more dependent on the Federal Government.
