2 Over the course of the next 2 lesson you will be… Developing your understanding of the role of a director Learning about monologues Either rehearsing a scripted monologue or writing your own monologue Rehearsing you monologue for performance in line with GCSE criteria

3 Monologues A monologue is a speech delivered by an actor alone on the stage You will be working on a monologue during the course of the lesson! This is your opportunity to show your teacher exactly what you understand about characterisation and to show off your AMAZING talent

5 The Role of the Director Professional directors use an effective questioning method to encourage their actors This way the rehearsal process is less director orientated and the actors are forced to become reflective in their work The performers are bombarded with questions during the rehearsal process. For this reason, the actors do not have to respond to every question, they can select the ones that they think are going to enhance their performance the most Actors feelings are continually protected throughout

7 Assessment criteria for monologue presentations An E grade student will: –Demonstrate a character with some success –Consider their vocal expression in performance –Attempt to maintain eye contact with the audience –Think about the use of space

8 To be awarded a D grade you need to… Create and maintain clear characterisation Use vocal expression appropriately and with some effect Use eye contact effectively in performance Use space effectively Consider your use of gestures and apply that understanding to the performance

9 To obtain a C grade you will need to: Create a clear character which you sustain throughout your performance. Perform your monologue with sensitivity and understanding Use vocal expression appropriately and to good effect Use space and gestures appropriately with a great deal of success Utilize eye contact to dramatic effect
