Learning Goals for Chapter 1

Students will be able to discuss the various ways that geographers describe where things are.

4- I can do all of 3 AND discuss how scale and distortion are essential in reading maps. 3- I can discuss how geographers use maps, including scale and projection AND contemporary tools including GIS, GPS and Remote Sensing.

2- I can explain how maps OR contemporary tools are used to explain where places are, but not both. 1- I know that maps and contemporary tools can explain where things are, but I do not understand how.

Students will be able to explain why each place on earth is unique.

4- I can do all of 3 AND discuss how human or physical activity can change each of them. 3- I can explain how place name, site, situation and mathematical location make each place unique while providing specific examples.

2- I can explain how 2 of the following 4 make a place on earth unique: place name, site, situation, and mathematical location. 1- I know that each place on earth is unique.

Students will be able to explain how cultural landscape and regions are used to describe a place on earth.

4- I can do all of three AND compare the cultural landscape of various places in the world. 3- I can define AND discuss the importance of the cultural landscape AND discuss the role of the THREE types of regions providing examples.

2- I can define the cultural landscape and define the three types of regions. 1- I can define either the cultural landscape or the three types of regions, but not both.

Students will understand culture and its impact on the physical environment

4- I can do all of three AND discuss the impact of culture on the environments in Florida and the Netherlands. 3- I can discuss how culture impacts the physical environments (physical processes), including the possiblist and environmental determinist schools of thought.

2- I can define culture, environmental determinism and possiblism, but I do not know how culture affects all the physical processes. 1- I can define culture.

Students will be able to describe how scale and distribution are important.

4- I can do all of three AND discuss the pros and cons of globalization 3- I can discuss the importance of scale from a local AND a global perspective (with economy and culture) and how density, distribution and concentration are significant with examples.

2- I can define scale at a local and global perspective and define density, distribution and concentration. 1-I know that local and global are not at the same scale.

Students will understand the different places on earth are connected, and the impact of that connection.

4- I can do all of three AND discuss the positives and negatives of this interaction. 3- I can discuss how places interact including all types of diffusion with examples (relocation, hierarchical, contagious and stimulus) and how that impacts culture on a local and global scale.

2- I can name the four types of diffusion, but I cannot provide an example for each. 1-I know that some places on the earth are connected.
