2 THE CONSTITUTION  Has 7 articles  The preamble is the introduction and states the goals of the Constitution.  “We the people……” the power is in the hands of the people

3 ARTICLE I: LEGISLATIVE BRANCH  Makes the Laws  Bicameral: upper house (Senate) & lower house (House of Representatives)  Congress can coin money, collect taxes & regulate trade  Congress has the power of declare war

4  435: based on population.  Serve 2 year terms  Must be 25 years old  A citizen for 7 years  Led by Speaker of the House  100: 2 per state  Serve 6 year terms  Must be 30 years old  A citizen for 9 years  Led by Vice President CONGRESS House of Representatives Senate

5 1.Introduced in Houses of Representatives. 2.Committee in House of Representatives 3.Whole House votes 4.Committee in Senate HOW A BILL BECOMES A LAW 5. Whole Senate votes 6. President either signs it into law or vetoes. 7. A veto can be overridden by a 2/3 vote of both houses of Congress.

6 THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH: THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT  Must be 35 years old and born a US citizen and lived here for 14 years  Can serve 2 four year terms  Works with Vice President and Cabinet ( advisors) to enforce the laws

7 PRESIDENTIAL ROLES  Chief Lawmaker: Signs bills into law  Chief Foreign Policy Maker: Meets with other nations  Commander in Chief: head of military forces  Chief Law Enforcer: Enforces laws, appoints federal justices  Watchdog of Economy: Plans the budget for the federal government

8 ARTICLE 3: THE JUDICIAL BRANCH  The Supreme Court interprets (judges) the laws  Made up of 9 Justices led by the Chief Justice  Hears disputes between states and appeals involving the Constitution.  Has the power to declare a law unconstitutional this is called Judicial Review.

9  Can Pardon (forgive) lawbreakers  Can veto a law  Can impeach a president  Override a veto  Can reject of judicial nominee CHECKS & BALANCES EXECUTIVE LEGISLATIVE

10 ARTICLES 4-7  Article IV: Congress can admit new states  Article V: Amendments allow the Constitution to change of the nation changes. Amendments must be proposed & ratified  Article VI: The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land  Article VII: 9 of 13 states must approve the Constitution to be the law of the land. All 13 eventually ratified.

11  1 : Freedom of speech, religion, press, petition & assembly  2: Right to bear arms  3: No Quartering of soldiers  4: Search & Seizure- must have a warrant THE BILL OF RIGHTS: INDIVIDUAL FREEDOMS  5: Rights of the Accused  6: Trial by jury and the right to an attorney  8: No cruel or unusual punishment or excessive bail.
