Hummingbirds Hummingbirds are small, colorful birds with iridescent feathers. Their name comes from the fact that they flap their wings so fast (about 80 times per second) that they make a humming noise. Hummingbirds can fly right, left, up, down, backwards, and even upside down. They are also able to hover by flapping their wings in a figure-8 pattern. They have a specialized long and tapered bill that is used to obtain nectar from the center of long, tubular flowers. The hummingbird’s feet are used for perching only, and are not used for hopping or walking.

Hummingbirds primarily eat flower nectar, tree sap, insects and pollen. Hummingbirds are found only in the Western Hemisphere, from southeastern Alaska to southern Chile, although most live in the tropics. There are more than 300 species of hummingbirds, 12 of which summer in North America and winter in tropical areas. Reproduction Gestation: 13-22 days. Clutch size: Between 1-3 eggs. The young start to fly in 18 to 30 days.

Toucan Toucans live in tropical and sub-tropical jungle regions, they are native to southern Mexico in Central America, the northern areas of South America, and the Caribbean region.Mexico Toucans have a black body with white on their chest. They have orange skin around their eyes with a bright orange and yellow bill. Toucans are renown for their large colorful bills. At 20 cm they have the longest bill of any bird in the world in relation to their body size 63.5 cm. Despite its size, the toucan's bill is very light as it is made of keratin (like human hair) in a honeycomb- like structure. It is believed to be this large in order to keep the bird cool in the hot climates it lives in. This does mean the toucan's bill is not very strong, so it can't be used for digging or fighting like other bird beaks. Toucan's have long narrow tongues up to 15 cm long. Toucans are one of the nosier jungle birds. They live for up to 20 years, and their predators include Jaguars and other big cats. A mother Toucan lays 2-4 eggs per year. A chick’s bill is not big when they are born. It grows as they grow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky7sZMyMy-A
